Social Bookmarking to Generate Leads
Monday, December 8, 2008 at 19:27 Social Bookmarking: Social Bookmarking- What is it and How can it Generate Leads?
Social Bookmarking started because there are over 15 billion websites on the internet and people wanted a way to save their favourites without having to use their web browsers. (It becomes too messy and is limited to only one computer).
So social bookmarking evolved – instead of using a browser, you use a website.
There are various social bookmarking sites, where you can create an account and bookmark your favourite web sites.
Backflip, Delicious, Diigo, Misterwong and StumbleUpon are some of the social bookmarking sites I use.
Your chosen site is saved with all your other bookmarks at that social bookmarking site. Also the tags (keywords you use to describe the site) are saved in a list of all your tags.
Social Bookmarking: Social Bookmarking Tags are very important.
You can sort the bookmarks by all the tags you’ve assigned. Also your friends (at the same location) can see your bookmarks and see your tags.
So, your bookmarks can benefit other people. You can create a network of friends who have similar interests all sharing websites of interest.
Here’s a short video (3mins) to explain social bookmarking:
Social Bookmarking Generates Leads
Here’s the exciting stuff!
When you bookmark your article (at a “do follow” social bookmarking site) it increases the number of incoming links to your content (This applies to your videos,Squidoo, Hub pages, Blog etc).
The search engines see it as a “thumbs up” vote for your content piece and it increases your visibility on the search engines as you move up the rankings.( You get more hits from the search engines themselves.)
Also you can get tons of traffic and leads from social bookmarking sites themselves. People visit these sites and come across your bookmarks and end up at your content. (This is called Organic traffic- and it happens at both “do follow” and “no follow” sites).
And we all know that more traffic generates more leads.
Social Bookmarking at “Do Follow” Social Bookmarking Sites:
When your content is bookmarked at a “do follow” site (Furl, MisterWong), the search engines count it as an incoming link to your content. The more incoming links you have to your content, the higher you move up the rankings.
Social Bookmarking at “No Follow” Social Bookmarking Sites:
When your content is bookmarked at a “no follow” site (Delicious, StumbeUpon) the search engines don’t count it as incoming links to your content (so it doesn’t really help with moving you up the rankings)-BUT you still can get lots of organic traffic from the bookmarking sites themselves.
A great tool to see a list of Social Bookmarking sites is www.socialmarker.com. You can also see which are "do follow" and which are "no follow sites". Social Marker also makes it easy to sign up at more than one social bookmarking site at a time.
Warning: Use Social Marker with caution!
Social Bookmarking Pitfalls to avoid
Don’t just bookmark your own sites- the community doesn’t like it, it’s seen as spam. Also the search engines will penalize you.
Spamming is when you shamelessly and systematically promote your stuff. Sites won’t show your stuff and nor will the search engines.
For every one of your sites you promote, promote 3, 4 and sometimes 5 other sites.
Here’s also a great article to read for more on what social bookmarking is and how to generate more leads to your content. Plus how to avoid the costly pitfalls of social bookmarking spam tools like Social Marker.
